A Kundli (also called Janam Kundali or birth chart) is a diagram showing the positions of the nine planets (Navagraha) in the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses at the exact moment and place of your birth. It is the foundation of Vedic astrology used to analyze personality, predict life events, and time favorable periods.
You need three details: your date of birth, your exact time of birth (from hospital records or birth certificate if possible), and your place of birth (city). Birth time accuracy matters - a 5-minute difference can change your Ascendant (Lagna) and shift house placements.
Divisional charts divide each zodiac sign into smaller segments to analyze specific life areas. Key ones include D1 (Rashi, overall), D9 (Navamsa, marriage and dharma), D10 (Dashamsha, career), D7 (Saptamsha, children), and D12 (Dwadashamsha, parents). BestKundli generates up to 25 divisional charts for detailed analysis.
Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used Vedic astrology timing system. It divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets, with each planet ruling a specific period (Mahadasha). During its Mahadasha, a planet's position and strength in your chart activates its results. Sub-periods (Antardasha, Pratyantardasha) refine timing further.
Both show identical planetary data, only the visual layout differs. North Indian style is diamond-shaped with fixed houses (Ascendant always on top) and signs rotating. South Indian style is a fixed 12-box grid with Aries always at the top-left and Ascendant marked. Choose whichever you were taught or find easier to read.
The Lagna (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It determines the layout of all 12 houses in your chart and is considered the most personal point in Vedic astrology - shaping your appearance, personality, and approach to life.
Differences usually come from: (1) the Ayanamsa used - Lahiri, Raman, and KP systems give slightly different results; (2) True vs Mean node calculations for Rahu and Ketu; (3) exact latitude and longitude of your birth place. BestKundli uses Lahiri Ayanamsa by default, the most widely accepted in traditional Vedic astrology.
